Who are we?
The Canadian Consortium of Science Equity Scholars (CCSES) is a group of educators and researchers dedicated to enhancing equity in post-secondary science. Together, we are working to change systemic barriers to student success, uncover ways to foster students’ sense of belonging in science, and gather evidence for inclusive teaching practices.
With funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), we are working to build a cross-Canada network of scholars with expertise in education research, educational psychology, and equity-based projects in biology, chemistry, and physics.
Our goals
To better understand our students with respect to their social and academic identities and experiences in the classroom.
To help educators better understand and respond to the diverse needs of students in their specific disciplinary contexts.
To advance science equity scholarship in post-secondary settings by applying critical approaches.
To improve our collective ability to address current and future national and global challenges, we need to understand how to make all people feel welcome and included in science programs, which will contribute to furthering social justice and parity in science careers.

We gratefully acknowledge contributions from our founding partner institutions: The University of British Columbia, Faculty of Science; University of Calgary; University of Toronto, Scarborough; and York University, Faculty of Science. Partner institutions provided in-kind and cash support.
We are also grateful for the initial seed funding for this project at UBCV – an Equity and Inclusion Scholars Fund Grant (2019-2022).
